Thrillers need a clock and this one has a good one: until Thursday. The father is away, the stepson is staying in the room across the hall, and the two of them share a bathroom. Every episode is a day closer to the father coming home, and the series is disciplined about reminding you.

That structure is the reason this works better than most of the stepmom shelf. The tension is not only about whether something will happen. It is about the deadline it has to happen before, and about the fact that both characters can count.

Episode 1 and the door

The sleeping arrangement is explained in the first episode and it is clearly deliberate. She has chosen which room he is in. She leaves her bedroom door open. He raises the obvious objection and she answers it with a line about knowing exactly who she is, which is the best piece of writing in the series and arrives in the first ninety seconds.

That self-awareness is rare here. The stepmom series in this catalogue usually play the older character as either oblivious or predatory, and this one does neither: she is an adult making a decision and willing to say so.

How far it goes

Five out of five. The kitchen scene in episode 2 is explicit and there is no warm-up to it. The series does not escalate towards something; it establishes its register early and stays there.

If you are deciding from the poster, be aware that the poster is restrained compared with what is inside.

Two adults and an absent father

The son is the weaker half, as the viewpoint character usually is in this format. He objects, he is overruled, he stops objecting. The series is not interested in his interiority and does not pretend to be.

The father never appears. That is the right call: he works better as a date on a calendar than as a character, and the series gets more out of his absence than it would from a confrontation.
