The setup
A son is home from college and his girlfriend is staying too. His stepmother, restless and unnamed, responds by writing house rules.
The rulebook is the series’ one good idea. A rule is a statement about what someone has been thinking about, and the list she produces is a slow confession disguised as hospitality.
Episode 2 is the series
The first rule is reasonable. So is the second, nearly. By the fourth, the list has stopped being about the house and started being about the girlfriend, and the son is standing there working out whether he is allowed to notice.
That episode is well judged, and it is free. It also does something most of this shelf cannot: it makes the older character’s intent legible without her ever saying it.
Why the girlfriend matters
She is the reason the rules exist. Without her there is nothing to regulate and no pretext for the list. The series understands this well enough to keep her present and not well enough to give her anything to do, which is the usual fate of the third character here.

The rulebook is a neat device: every rule tells you what she is thinking about, and the girlfriend's presence gives her a reason to write them down. The series is at its best in episode 2, where a reasonable-sounding list stops sounding reasonable, and ordinary afterwards.
