A newly appointed night manager takes his first shift at an elegant old hotel. The room-service round takes him along one corridor, and every guest who calls down has something other than room service in mind.

The setting does the work

Rotating-cast series have one structural problem: when the people change every episode, nothing accumulates. The answer is to make the place the continuity, and this is the series in the catalogue that manages it.

The hotel is specific. The corridors look like the same corridors from episode to episode, the lighting holds, and the building has the particular quality of an old hotel at night, which is that it is both empty and full. For a format where visual consistency is the first thing to break, that is an achievement worth noting.

Compared with the other round

Every Wife on Candy Lane has the same structure: one constant, one new door per episode. That series gets a little continuity out of gossip travelling down the street. This one gets none, and instead spends it on atmosphere.

The hotel version is the more watchable of the two. The street version has the better idea.
