The setup
Jake is broke and housesitting for his best friend Tyler over a weekend. The woman who lives in the house is Tyler’s mother, newly divorced, and she has a different job in mind for him.
Then her best friend Dana turns up, works out what is happening, and negotiates her way into the arrangement.
It is actually a farce
That is rare here. Almost everything on this shelf is a two-hander with an obstacle; this is a farce with the proper machinery: two women who know about each other, one man trying to keep two schedules from overlapping, a house he does not know his way around, and a friend who keeps phoning to check on his mother.
The free pair sets it all up in about two minutes. Episode 1 is the arrival, with Vanessa joking that she thought he would stand her up. Episode 2 is Dana coming through an open gate at the wrong moment and pricing her silence. She calls it a turn.
The heat wave
A small thing the series gets right: it is hot, everyone says so, and that does more work than any amount of lingering would. Heat is a reason for doors to be open and people to be underdressed without anyone having to decide to be.
